EcoVadis Checklist: 6 Steps to a Strong Rating

Preparing for an EcoVadis assessment? This checklist walks through the 6 steps to more points – from methodology and multi-use evidence to embedding ESG. Includes a free download.

Created on: June 25, 2026
In brief
  • A strong EcoVadis rating increasingly determines market access, business relationships and credibility – the requirements are extensive and the evidence rules strict.
  • Many companies lose points even though they are substantively well positioned – the gap is structure and documentation, not substance.
  • EcoVadis assesses four themes (Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, Sustainable Procurement) based on industry, size and country. Medals (Bronze to Platinum) are awarded on a relative basis.
  • The biggest lever: tackle the highest-weighted questions first – often KPIs as well as targets and actions.
  • A useful mental model: the rating is the "Olympic event" (a snapshot date) – what really counts is the "training season" in between assessments.
  • The complete EcoVadis checklist by leadity is available as a compact guide for free download.

An EcoVadis request rarely lands at a convenient moment: an important customer asks for an up-to-date rating, the questionnaire is extensive, the deadline is tight – and suddenly your entire sustainability documentation is under scrutiny. Yet anyone who understands the assessment process can achieve noticeable results with a few targeted steps.

This guest article by leadity walks you through the first four steps drawn directly from practice – and explains what really matters with EcoVadis. The complete checklist with all six steps and concrete implementation details is available as a free download from leadity.

What is EcoVadis?

EcoVadis is one of the world's most established platforms for assessing the sustainability performance of companies. Instead of a report, you build a profile that is evaluated against submitted evidence – the result is a scorecard with a value between 0 and 100 points.

EcoVadis assesses four themes:

The four assessment themes
  • Environment – e.g. energy, emissions, resources, products
  • Labor & Human Rights – e.g. working conditions, health, diversity
  • Ethics – e.g. anti-corruption, fair business practices
  • Sustainable Procurement – e.g. ESG requirements along the supply chain

The medals (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) are awarded not against fixed point thresholds but on a relative basis: they reflect how a company performs compared to all assessed companies (percentile ranks). That also means the bar rises every year as companies improve. Standing still is effectively moving backwards.

EcoVadis is not a sustainability report

Unlike a CSRD or VSME report, EcoVadis is a scored self-assessment with an evidence requirement. Many documents you create for your reporting anyway can be reused – provided they meet the formal criteria. This is exactly where significant potential lies.

Why companies leave points on the table

The most common misconception: "We're well positioned on sustainability, so the rating will be fine." In practice, companies lose points for entirely different reasons:

  • The assessment logic is not understood – effort flows into low-weighted questions.
  • Evidence is missing or fails the formal criteria (outdated, incomplete, not verifiable).
  • Existing documents are not used more than once, even though they could cover several questions.
  • Relevant departments are brought in too late – leaving crucial pieces of the puzzle missing.
Strong on substance ≠ strong in the rating

EcoVadis does not assess how sustainable you are, but how well you can prove it. Strong commitment without structured documentation stays invisible in the rating. Structure is therefore the underrated lever.

If you want to quickly find out where your biggest levers are, leadity's EcoVadis QuickCheck offers a direct entry point – a structured conversation that identifies the concrete point-winners for your company.

EcoVadis checklist: 6 steps to a strong rating

The following four steps show you what matters in your EcoVadis preparation. Steps 5 and 6 – along with the concrete implementation details (which exports, which templates, which evidence covers which questions) – are in the full checklist available for download.

1. Truly understand the EcoVadis methodology

The questions and their weightings differ by industry, company size and country. Once you know the assessment logic, you can set priorities deliberately and avoid unnecessary effort. The first step is therefore never filling in the form, but understanding it: which themes carry particular weight in my profile? Which evidence is even expected?

2. Tackle the top point-scorers first

Not every question counts the same. Focus first on the highest-weighted questions – often KPIs as well as targets and actions. That is exactly where you can win many points with relatively little effort. This prioritization is the fastest route to a noticeably better score, before you get lost in detailed questions.

3. Use evidence strategically – one document, multiple points

Many documents – such as sustainability reports, policies or certifications – cover several questions at once. The trick is to identify these multi-use pieces of evidence and apply them consistently wherever they have an effect. This avoids duplicate work, following the principle: one document, multiple points.

4. Create EcoVadis-ready evidence

This is the most common source of error: documents fail to meet the formal criteria – missing mandatory fields, no verifiable dating, outdated versions. EcoVadis only accepts evidence that is complete, current and built to leading standards. Getting this right saves follow-up queries, rework and frustration – and secures points that would otherwise be lost despite existing substance.

EcoVadis in a nutshell: your checklist for a strong rating

Step 5 explains how to involve the relevant departments and areas early – and why EcoVadis is a team sport, not a solo project. Step 6 shows how to embed sustainability as a lasting management system and make your rating stronger every year. Plus: concrete pointers on multi-use evidence, templates and the biggest point levers – all in a compact guide, free to take away.

How the EcoVadis QuickCheck works

If you'd rather not start from scratch, a structured outside view helps. leadity's free EcoVadis QuickCheck follows four steps:

Four steps to a results document
  • Download the questionnaire – you export your individual Excel questionnaire from the EcoVadis platform.
  • Book a QuickCheck appointment – you work through the questionnaire together, step by step.
  • Find top point-scorers & evidence – you're shown where the same data earns points multiple times.
  • Receive a results document – afterwards you know exactly which evidence best covers your biggest levers.

From scorecard to lasting improvement

The real work begins after the rating: the EcoVadis scorecard shows strengths and weaknesses per theme and provides concrete areas for improvement. Prioritizing these systematically raises your score not just once, but year after year – that's the "training season" from step 6.

You may recognize a similar logic from reporting: an internal Sustainability Scorecard also bundles scattered ESG data and makes progress visible. leadity describes how to reach a good score in detail in the article “EcoVadis: achieving a good score” (in German).

EcoVadis & CSRD: how they connect

EcoVadis and the CSRD are not opposites – they complement each other. Much of the evidence you need for a strong EcoVadis rating – policies, targets, metrics, actions – is created anyway in the course of your sustainability reporting. Thinking about both together avoids duplicate work.

Frequently asked questions about EcoVadis (FAQ)

How long does an EcoVadis assessment take?

From the questionnaire being unlocked to the result, it typically takes several weeks depending on your preparation. The actual processing time depends heavily on how well evidence and responsibilities are prepared – which is exactly what the six steps above address.

How much does EcoVadis cost?

EcoVadis charges an annual fee that scales with company size and scope. The cost of the assessment itself is usually not the decisive factor – more relevant is the internal effort for preparation and evidence, which structure can reduce significantly.

Which EcoVadis medal is 'good'?

Medals are awarded on a relative basis (percentile ranks): Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum reflect how you perform compared to all assessed companies. Many customers require at least Silver. What level is "good" for you depends mainly on the expectations of your business partners.

How often do I need to be reassessed?

EcoVadis ratings are generally valid for twelve months. An annual reassessment is standard – which is exactly why it pays to embed ESG performance continuously as a management system rather than starting from scratch every year.

How can I improve my EcoVadis rating quickly?

The fastest lever is prioritization: tackle the highest-weighted questions first (KPIs, targets and actions), combined with multi-use evidence. leadity's full checklist shows concretely where these levers are and how to use them.

Conclusion

A strong EcoVadis rating is not a matter of luck, but of structure. By understanding the methodology, tackling the right questions first, using evidence more than once and embedding sustainability continuously, you turn a tiresome obligation into a genuine competitive advantage.
