05FAQ

Common questions

On CSRD, double materiality and sustainability reporting.

What is CSRD?

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is an EU directive that requires companies to report transparently on their social, environmental and economic impact. It sets out what companies must report on environment, society, human rights and governance — covering near-term, medium-term and long-term plans. It goes further than the previous rules and replaces them.

Which companies are affected by CSRD? [Updated]

Important note: the EU Commission's Omnibus proposal aims to amend the thresholds. Today's rules still apply, but they may change. Large companies (regardless of capital-market orientation) meeting two of three criteria: balance sheet > €25M, revenue > €50M, > 250 employees. Plus: capital-market-oriented SMEs and non-EU companies with > €150M EU revenue and at least one EU subsidiary. The expected new thresholds are 1,000 employees and €450M revenue. Implementation timelines have been pushed back by 2 years for many companies. Companies below these thresholds can voluntarily report under the VSME standard.

What Does "Double Materiality" Mean?

In the CSRD context, "double materiality" refers to two angles of materiality assessment: Impact materiality: how does the company's activity affect the environment and society? This includes environmental impacts, social impacts, human rights and other relevant topics. Financial materiality: how do environmental, social and governance topics affect the company's financial performance? For example, risks or opportunities from climate change, social inequalities or governance. The goal is balanced reporting that captures both societal and business impacts.

Why do I need a CSR tool or ESG software?

Using a CSR tool isn't required by the CSRD — but software simplifies and automates data collection, analysis and reporting, leading to more efficient and accurate reports. It also makes it easier to track goals and measures, contributing to professional sustainability management.
