What is the Materiality Model Canvas?

The Materiality Model Canvas (MMC) is a powerful strategy framework that supports companies in conducting the double materiality assessment and visualizing as well as communicating the results.

Based on the Business Model Canvas, the Materiality Model Canvas offers a structured and intuitive method for carrying out an efficient strategic materiality analysis. The tool provides assistance in meeting the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

How does the Materiality Model Canvas work?

Using the MMC is simple and effective. So you can make optimum use of it:

Before performing the double materiality assessment

The Materiality Model Canvas can be used as a strategic planning and preparation tool before conducting the double materiality analysis. The following objectives are achieved by using the framework:

  • Structuring and creating clarity: Identification of the relevant dimensions (strategy, stakeholders, topics, risks, opportunities).
  • Efficient preparation: Reduction of the work involved in the actual DMA through clear pre-structuring and focusing on the most important aspects.
  • Identify and involve stakeholders: Early involvement of top management and identification of other stakeholders in order to take their perspectives and priorities into account.
  • Identify potential gaps: Ensure that no relevant topics or stakeholders are overlooked.
  • Focus on strategic alignment: Pre-definition of strategic objectives to understand what the ESG strategy is and the level of ambition of the company’s reporting.

Through interactive workshops or internal discussions, initial focal points can be defined and prioritized before the actual analysis begins. This not only saves time, but also ensures that relevant perspectives are included and that the DMA is focused on the most important issues. The canvas creates a visual clarity that facilitates collaboration within the team and with external stakeholders.

After performing the double materiality assessment

After the double materiality analysis, the Materiality Model Canvas can be used to visualize and communicate the results in a structured manner. It serves as a framework for clearly presenting the key findings from the materiality analysis, such as strategy, the identified topics and stakeholders, on one page.

The canvas provides an ideal basis for communicating the results of the DMA both internally to management and externally to stakeholders such as investors, customers or regulatory authorities. With its clear structure, the tool creates transparency and promotes targeted tracking of the defined measures and goes beyond the information provided by the classic materiality matrix.

It is particularly helpful for companies that fall under the reporting obligations of the CSRD or want to professionalize their sustainability strategy.

The duration depends on the complexity of the organization and the availability of data.

As a rule, an initial draft can be created in a workshop lasting 1-3 hours, with fine-tuning and prioritization taking place afterwards.

Compared to the classic materiality matrix, the Materiality Model Canvas offers a more dynamic and holistic approach. While the materiality matrix is primarily used to prioritize material topics in a graphical representation (matrix), the MMC goes beyond this and also shows the strategic goals, relevant stakeholders, locations, KPIs and more at a glance in addition to the material topics.

The double materiality analysis evaluates sustainability issues from two perspectives:

  1. Inside-out (Impact Materiality): How does the company influence the environment, society and the economy?
  2. Outside-in (financial materiality): How do external sustainability factors affect the company?

By combining these two dimensions, the analysis identifies topics that are crucial for both the company and its stakeholders, thereby laying the foundation for strategic decisions and CSRD reporting.

Our vision is to empower every company with the right tools and understandable knowledge to shape a more sustainable and responsible future and to see sustainability as a strategic opportunity.
