Importantly, it will cover non-SMEs with fewer than 1,000 employees (or under €450m turnover) that fall outside the CSRD scope. CSRD-obligated companies may not require value-chain partners with 1,000 employees or fewer to provide information beyond this voluntary standard.
In contrast to the comprehensive requirements of the CSRD, which since the omnibus changes primarily cover large companies with more than 1,000 employees and more than €450m net turnover, the VSME standard is modular, lightweight and geared towards the real resources of small companies. It focuses on the key ESG aspects that are relevant for SMEs: CO2 emissions, energy consumption, employee concerns and supply chain risks.
The standard contains a total of 190 disclosure requirements divided into a mandatory basic module and a voluntary comprehensive module.
